Congratulations

The birth of a child can be an exciting, and sometimes even frightening, time. Will I be a good parent? Will my baby be a safe, happy, and healthy child? How will I know what to do? Becoming a parent of a child with a disability comes with additional fears and concerns; however, none of these should be overshadowed by the pride, joy, and excitement of becoming a new parent. It all begins with accepting your child as a person. Take the time to learn about your child’s disability, gather information, ask questions, but most of all, search for a support network. Many parents have found it helpful to talk to other parents who have literally “been in their shoes” – to share experiences and ideas from potty training to riding a bike to eventually going to the Prom! Early Intervention is the first step for your child’s developmental growth. Several providers are available through out Gaston County, so enlist in these services as soon as possible. Parent involvement is crucial to the success of these services. You will be your child’s best resource and advocate!

People with mental challenges can learn to become extremely self-sufficient and capable of performing every day tasks like the rest of their peers. They will be able to go to school and graduate, maintain successful jobs, and live independently as long as they are given the encouragement, support, and empowerment to pursue such opportunities. The families, volunteers, and members of The Arc of Gaston County are dedicated to providing you with the community-based resources and support needed to raise a happy, healthy child. You may contact us at 704-861-1036 for additional information.
