The Arc was founded in 1950 by a small group of parents and other concerned individuals. During that time, little was known about mental retardation or its causes, and many parents were advised to institutionalize their children. Furthermore, there were virtually no programs, activities, or family support networks established to assist in the development and care of individuals with mental challenges. The Arc has grown to over 140,000 members with chapters throughout the United States. The Gaston County chapter was founded over 26 years ago, and currently serves our developmentally delayed population and their families as a resource guide to available services in our area. You can learn more about The Arc of the Unites States by visiting online at www.thearc.org or The Arc of North Carolina at www.arcnc.org.
